For two decades we automated tasks. The next decade is about automating decisions. An autonomous platform is one that observes its own state, decides what to do, and acts — provisioning, healing, scaling and promoting without a ticket in sight.
Three levels of platform autonomy

- 2.Managed — the platform acts within policy, humans supervise.
- 3.Autonomous — the platform operates by default, humans set intent and exceptions.
Many organisations operate at level one and describe themselves as level two. The gap is not technology; it is trust, and trust is earned through observability and reversibility.

Why now
GitOps gave us declarative truth. Kubernetes gave us reconciling control loops. AI gives us judgement over signals we could never script. For the first time the three combine into platforms that genuinely run themselves.
What it means for your organisation
The winners will not be the teams with the most engineers. They will be the teams whose platforms need the fewest. Headcount stops being the lever; leverage does.
